MARCH 26
HISTORY - learned about the young Alexander the Great. They got into this, of course and really liked the story of the Gordian Knot. They were impressed that Alexander was so clever. And they really wanted to know how the knot got to be so big and strong.
SCIENCE - Polar habitat was good, they were surprised that polar bears and penguins don't live at the same pole. We did an experiment with blubber (Crisco) and all of my ice cubes in the kitchen sink and they thought this was the greatest thing. They thought you should be able to buy blubber to wear when you're in the cold weather. Except that is felt gross outside of the plastic bag.
Grasslands Habitat was interesting, too. They got into the predator/grazer relationship. We planted some more grass in the pots to see how long it takes to grow ( I'll water is this time!) and they spent alot of time on the coloring pages.
I forgot to print the assessments for these but I looked at them tonight and they would have gotten them all right today:)
I'm making out hotel reservations tonight. yeah!

and then they can have lunch and recess and we should be done by 1- 1:30.
Preschool Tuesday
I don't need to borrow chairs, I'll put the little table and chairs I have in here for Harrison and Sahalee, so I have 7 chairs. Ranae, could you bring the tricycle? I want them to ride out front this week until I get the ants in the backyard taken care of - they're out of control! Also, for our project, let's do something Easter, or we can collect leaves since we're talking about trees and make those cute leaf and crayon iron-on things. let me know what you think.

March 23, 2007 Art! Art! Art!
Hey Girls,
I have been looking over the remaining art lessons and the boys know the stuff in Unit 7 lessons 1, 3 and 4. So go ahead and click those off. I will be doing some art history lessons on Mondays so we will be able to end art in May. I do want to spend some time with unit 10 (architecture) because this is new for the boys and I think they will have fun with it. I also would like to take them to see something done by Frank Loyd Wright as an end of the year outing.
Tuesday we will finish Unit 8 then we will finish Unit 11 lessons 5 through 9 (China). Next Unit 9 (Still-life) and end with Unit 10 (Sculpture and Architecture).
See you all at the art show!

Thurs. March 15
So, today started out funny, but ended good. It was a BUSY day, but they did try their hardest to get the work done.
On the way over here, we had a bit of a problem with screaming and craziness so they all wrote me sentances for that. We also had the introduction of using the word "stupid" and "idot" on the ride over here. They all wrote me sentances for that. I told them that they are not even getting a warning for that kind of stuff and it is an automatic writing assignment. They accepted this and did it with no complaining.....sounds like a great start to the day, huh.
Anyway, we did history first and they got so into the Pelopponesian War. They asked great questions. French took a full hour today and Larts took a full hours. We didn't get to Science, but I figure since they are doing Science on Monday, it won't put us behind.
Have a great weekend!

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14
LA - Learned about writing a report. Discussed how to choose a topic, research the topic, take notes and write the report. Wrote a report on squirrels (the difference between notes and the report is that the report needs to be in complete sentences.) This would make a good writing sample. Reviewed the stories that they've read in this unit so far and took assessments on character, setting and plot. Setting is still a term they need to remember - it means where the story takes place. Character is who the story is about and plot is the action of the story or summary. They did well with the assessment but they still need reminders to slow down and read all the answers before choosing the best answer.
RANAE - LA for Thursday
Focus on discussing character, plot and setting, remind them that we learned about riddles this week, also.
Lesson 11: Activity 3 "No fighting, no biting" and Optional: Good manners, bad manners
Lesson 12: Activity 3 and Optional: who am I? ( it's a handout in their folders)
Lesson 12: Activity 3
There is an assessment for this book in their folders
FRIDAY LA
Lesson 9: Optional "Weather"
Lesson 10: Analogies and Optional:writing riddles
Lesson 11: Activity 1 "Weather Together" and Optional: unfolding weather
Lesson 15: Analogies
This week completed through lesson 15, so Unit 10 is complete.
Next week's lessons are Unit 11: Lessons 1-7

MONDAY, MARCH 12
LA - reviewed adjectives, learned about using adjectives to compare 3 or more subjects. on the exams they need to take their time and read each problem completely before choosing an answer ( David is best at doing this, Holden and Isaac tend to rush and they miss answers that way.) discussed riddles and how to decipher them by looking for clues. read "the princess and the pea" and answered questions about cause and effect. sometimes these are worded strangely - I think as long as they understand that one event leads to another, then they are getting the concept.
For the rest of the week they'll need the "weather" poem book, "classics for young readers", "ready, set, read" and "no fighting, no biting." And don't forget about the presentation of the memorized poem on Wed.
see you guys in the morning!

FRIDAY, MARCH 9
LA - reviewed details from the book "Owl at Home," did a character map for Owl and took the assessment. The last question on the assessment is a good one - they need to be able to answer questions in a complete sentence that provides a complete answer. David's answer was the best one because he stated what the setting was for the last chapter AND where it had been for the other chapters.
reviewed adjectives and learned about feeling (emotion) adjectives and feeling (touch) adjectives. The problems are getting trickier because some answers could work for more than one question, so they need to be able to identify the BEST answer for each question. I suggested that they read all the questions BEFORE answering any of them so that they don't use up answers before they are sure which is actually the best one. It's a good strategy for them to start using, as they are going to be taking more of these types of assessments.
LA FOR WEEKEND
review pages paper-clipped in their folders.
Lesson 6:Activity 1 "Looking out the window" poem in the Weather poem book
Lesson 6: Activity 2 write their own poem ( handout in their folder or use your own)
Lesson 5: Analogies
We'll do another presentation on Wednesday - let's have them memorize something so they can practice eye-contact and good posture, etc....
LESSONS COMPLETED THIS WEEK: THROUGH LESSON 8
See you tomorrow!

Thurs. March 7
Good day today. We read "Bedtime with Francis" in Larts. It took us about 40 minutes to read, but they did a great job of listening while someone else was reading. "The Lady of the Waters" was a very interesting and they really had a hard time grasping its story line. It was all about this woman who was testing these two girls. She had them complete tasks that required obedience, but one of the tasks required them to be disobedient because it was the right thing to do. They had a hard time understanding that sometimes it is ok to disobey because it is the "right" thing to do even though you were asked to do otherwise. Great discussion
Science- desert habitat. Really went fast because they know a lot about this subject anyway. we did do a fun experiment though to show that food has water in it. They were amazed that a piece of bread actually has water in it.
wed. we did:
History- learned about the Golden Age of Athens. This was when Pericles was the leader. They rebuilt the entire city and constructed the Parthenon. They already knew a lot about this from suzy's lesson in Art.
Music- We learned "My country tis of Thee" and "Star Spangled Banner" . We learned about the meaning behind the words and why they were written. We also reviewed "Peter and the Wolf" . They are ready to go for Saturday.
See everyone tomorrow.

MONDAY, MARCH 5
LA - reviewed adjectives (number words, colors, words to describe size, taste, feelings, shapes).
reviewed conjunctions, compound words and sentence structure.
took the unit assessment. they did very well with this, yeah!
read "Owl at Home." they'll do the character map and assessment for this on Wed.
Science - forest habitat. learned about the levels in the forest: forest floor, shrub, understory and canopy.
made a model of the forest - they had so much fun with this and added a lot of detail.
History - the battle of Thermopylae. long discussion of what it means to be a traitor. they were very concerned about the Greeks losing this battle and how brave soldiers could be all be killed. did well with their coloring page and summary page.
Isaac lost his tooth on the trampoline today!
Ranae - Isaac can complete the forest habitat coloring page on his own. The info. about the field trip is in his science folder.
Suzy - I put their desert habitat coloring pages in their art folders. Isaac completed all the stamps, so those are in his science folder.
FOR WEDNESDAY: they will do a presentation, so have them prepare either a reading or a poem from memory. they can choose to read an excerpt from a favorite book if they want to do that.

MARCH 3
Welcome back Ranae!
Last week we finished all of LA Unit 9 and Unit 10 Lesson 1.
This week, for LA we'll need the books "Owl at Home" and " Bedtime for Frances." We'll also be using the book of weather poems if you could put that in their bags and Great Books Pegasus volume 3.
Ranae - for Science, Suzy is going to do the coloring pages for the Habitat book with the boys in art, so plan for that with your lessons. Also, I have MOPS this week and the dentist on Tuesday and Holden's allergy appointment on Wed. so karate is out for me those days. We're still on for Mon. though. I'm going to take them on Fri. to karate if you want to do that day with me. Let me know.
My new hair makes me look like Willy Wonka. I was scaring Ella today. Great.
