WED FEB. 21
LA - Read the poem "wind" and underlined the nouns and circled the adjectives in each line. had fun talking about the imagery in the poem.
- reviewed synonyms, antonyms and homophones. they did well giving examples of each, David's were particularly creative.
- read the poem "spill" from the weather poem book. talked about the imagery, that this is a good poem to memorize because it's short and clever. talked about e.e. cummings and how he wrote in all lowercase, just as this poem does.
- did presentations for the class. David did very well with the homework poem. Holden and Isaac need to work on not being silly while presenting and using good posture and eye contact. we should do this more often.
- read "sweet porridge" in the classics book. they did well with guessing the outcome and sequencing. introduced the concept of cause and effect. we'll need to point this out in stories, how one event leads to another, because they had some difficulty. Isaac needs to slow down in his reading so that he can answer the questions correctly. practiced reading with expression. summarized the story in their own words and they all were able to give the main points of the story.

Thurs. Feb. 23
French homework-- disk 3 ( I will give to Rachelle tomorrow) track 2 lesson 66-72.
Larts- We read "The Shoemaker and the Elves". It was a hard read, but they did well. It took us 30 minutes to get through the read. I was afraid they wouldn't remember anything, but their comprehension was good. We did interviews like they were an elf and I asked them questions (in their notebook) Philip and Isaac had the hardest time using the "I" pronoun when answering the questions. I just couldn't "get" in character. David had the most creative responses, and of course Holden had to get "in" character, so he squatted down and made himself small for his questions. They also colored a picture of what their Elf went on to do after the story.
Science- all about fruits and seeds. Things were getting dicey with everyone, so we only spent about 20 minutes on the lesson. I think they got the jist of it though. Everyone should ask their own assessment questions when plugging into the computer to see if they retained anything.
Have a great week! I will miss you guys!

MONDAY, FEB 19
LA - reviewed compound words.
-introduced adjectives - words used to describe nouns. they had some difficulty identifying all the adjectives in a sentence, if an adjective was used with a noun in the predicate it sometimes confused them. we did go over nouns in both parts of sentences and identifying all the nouns in a sentence but it's something we'll have to review. they had a hard time with the assessment - i had to help them correct some answers so I think I'm going to give them the assessment again on wednesday and see if I get better results. we need to remind them that adjectives are single words that describe a noun, not entire phrases. it's a tricky concept but they'll get it if we review.
-we reviewed colors as adjectives and this was easy for them.
-they were pretty creative with the description exercise, so check that out. we began a book for descriptive words that they can use as a reference when they're writing.
Science - learned about the part of the stem called the xylem. only David remembered this when I gave them the assessment but Holden and Isaac tried and they knew it started with an "x." the xylem in the stem carries the water from the roots to the other parts of the plant and is essential for the leaves to make the plants' food. we had an interesting discussion about how we need to treat plants gently in order to not damage the stem or roots so that the plant can make food. they all started talking about the rainforest and how we need to send the police there to stop people from cutting down the trees. they took off on that subject all on their own.
History - Athens was the first democracy. they found it hard to believe that America is a democracy because we don't go to an Assembly to vote. the lesson taught that democracy means "the people rule." none of the boys remembered this for the exam, but Holden and Isaac knew that it meant that people could vote. David remembered that with some prompting but we probably all need to review the concept. we discussed how in Athens only men could vote but now most democracies include women - they assumed this was because men are stronger and bigger (not too far off, actually!) and Isaac suggested that our army should force other countries to be democracies. Holden and David agreed and I said that that was one of the reasons we were in Iraq still was to help them start a democracy. David said we were there to kill the bad guys. it was a good discussion.
REMINDER FOR WED. - they need to be prepared to read or recite from memory a poem or other piece of writing. something from their journal would be fine.
beware rainy days, a day without outdoor recess is a crazy day indeed....

Thurs. Feb 15
good day today. Piano went really well, Ms. Julie said. French went well too. They all mastered the lesson and get to go on to the next one Gen said.
Larts- we read 3 little pigs and acted it out with puppets. I thought they would never do this, but they actually thought it was funny. I read Hansel and Gretel to them. We didn't have time to do the questions that went along with the story, so you may want to go over those. they are in Unit 9 lesson 2 and also in the pegasus book with the story. It took us a full hour to do these activities, but they were very focused.
Science- learned about the stem today. It was funny because they all had no idea that the stem carried water to the leaves. They thought stems were only to hold up the plant. David shared some stories about red wood trees since they were in the lesson and he had seen some recently. We started the celery experiment with the food coloring. They all wrote their hypothesis on the hand outs. It is funny because they really have no idea what is going to happen. They thought either the celery would start growing or that it would die. it will be fun to see their reactions to it turning blue.
Great day!! I will order the tickets for the show today.

FEB. 14 HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
LA - reviewed for the unit assessment . Unit Assessment - we need to work on knowing the difference between synonyms (different words that mean the same thing, glad and happy) and homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, one and won). Taken separately they understand these and they aren't having a problem with antonyms (opposites), but on the exam they confused synonyms and homophones.
Guided Reading Assessment: they did well with sequencing (Isaac needs to work on slowing down and checking his answers - he missed some because he was guessing, I think.) I encouraged them to go back into the story to look for the answers if they weren't sure. The comparing and contrasting part is easy for them, but it helps them to be critical readers.
We read "The Fox on the hill" in "Young Readers" and did the handout on this, more sequencing and content. We wrote an alternative ending together which I'll type up for you guys tonight - they had fun with it and were pretty creative.
Science - learned about leaves. Chlorophyll in leaves converts sunlight to energy and then food for the plant. The petiole holds the leaf onto the stem. The veins carry the food to other parts of the leaf. They could all stand to review these parts, especially that the cholorphyll in is found in the leaves and makes the plant food. Did some fun leaf etchings with crayon. Planted grass seeds at shallow, medium and deep holes in pots to see which will sprout fastest.
History - the myth of the naming of Athens. Athena and Poseidon both wanted it to be named after them. Athena gave an olive branch and Poseidon gave a war horse. The council of gods chose Athena because her gift would bring peace and plenty to Athens. They wrote a sentence about what they learned and colored a picture of Athena and Poseidon.
They played together really well today. They had alot of fun and even though they were silly sometimes, they didn't have to do any writing :)
I'll post the friday LA lessons tomorrow.
Ranae - LA for Thurs:
Lesson 12: Activity 3 The Three Little Pigs Session 1, including Problems and Solutions
Lesson 13:Activity 2:The Three little pigs session 2
Unit 9: Lesson 1:Optional Hansel and Gretel session 1
lesson 2:Optional Hansel and Gretel session 2
I've got these printed so I can give them to you tomorrow - call me in the morning and let me know....

FEB. 12 LA
Today we reviewed contractions, including the irregular "won't". They kept forgetting that "will not" doesn't follow the rule and is irregular, so it would be a good one to review. We reviewed how to use a dictionary and how some words have multiple meanings. They are really starting to notice words that can have more than one meaning - David pointed out when we were reading today that the word "lying" could refer to lying down or not telling the truth, go David! I introduced the concept of context - that we know what the definition or meaning of a word is based on how it is used in a sentence. We read "The three bears" and discussed the sequence of events in the story. Sequencing will be coming up frequently in the next few lessons.
It was a good day!
Suzy - we are going into Unit 9, if you could put the handouts for that unit in David's folder. Thanks again for the photos. I want to do something nice for your mom for sewing those costumes - any suggestions?
Ranae - I'd like to go see Peter and the Wolf - I think I'll just take Holden this time for a buddy day.

Peter and the Wolf
I just looked up the info. on the Peter and the Wolf. They are only playing on Sat. and Sun. The showtime that looked the best was March 10th (sat) at 2pm. Would anyone be able to do that? The tickets are 22$ for adults and 18$ for kids. Kind of pricey, but it would go so well with what we are studying in music. Let me know.
Feb. 12--history and music
We worked really hard the 2nd half of the day today. History was LONG (1hr. 20min). We covered the myth of Medusa and Perseus and the myth of Hercules. We reviewed for the Unit Assessment, did our history record books, as well as a worksheet. They all aced the assessment and really know their stuff. Lots of fun!
Music. I introduced Gregorian chant to them. We talked about how it is different than our modern music. Gregorian chant had no bar lines, key signatures, or time signatures. We learned about a drone bass (a single note sung through out the entire song). This was the first harmony ever in music. We sung a drone bass through out the recording. We learned the drum and guiro part to Obiswana. This took a long time. The rhythms were not easy. This is why I think the rhythm study we just started will be great. None of them can really internalize rhythm yet if other things are going on around them. This is very age appropriate, but we are always striving for this. We did the next lesson in our rhythm study which was triple meter (3 notes in a beat). They were all able to accomplish the lesson objectives. We will start "Peter and the Wolf" this next week. Suzy--it is the version with story and orchestration. it will be fun. I will look into the show this week too.

LA for Feb. 8
Sorry I didn't get this in yesterday.
Do the grammar review pages I paper-clipped together in their folders. These don't have to all be done today or at once. We can do these reviews whenever we can fit them in.
Lesson 5: Analogies
Lesson 6: Optional: Introducing "For Keeps" - do this
Lesson 8: Optional: writing a comb poem - just do this if you want to - if it turns out, it would be a good writing sample
Lesson 10: Analogies
I'll be starting "The Three Bears" on Monday, so you can either mark this lesson complete for this week or wait until next week.
This week's completed lessons are 4 - 9.

What we did Feb. 7th & 8th
Feb. 7th--
History- We learned about Arachne (the woman Athena turned into a spider) and King Midas. They, of course, loved these stories and really got into the book on King Midas. It has such beautiful illustrations.
Music- I started the rhythm register book with them this week for the first time. This is a very sequential way to teach rhythm using syllables at first and much later adding counting. It is easy for anyone to memorize how long a note is, but to internally be able to feel subdivisions is really hard, but necessary for any musician. I thought the first lesson would be so easy, but it actually took them a while to be able to get it. I keep track of everything in a note book, so if you ever want to see how they are doing you can look in it. We also did stick rhythms to "Peas" and learned the dance to "Santy Maloney". We finished "Carnival of the Animals" with the last 3 movements---Fossils, swans, and the parade. Very fun. *****LISTEN to track #17 ( a gregorian chant) and track #30 (Obiswana) for next week.
Feb. 8th
Ms. Julie said they had a very weird day in piano--lots of dropping things, turning computers off by accident, and tripping (sounds like they are growing!) French went pretty well, but they need to keep repeating the lesson they are on.
Larts- we got lots done and they worked really hard. They finished "City Mouse, Country Mouse" and all the work that goes with it. I read them the "Mermaid Who Lost Her Comb". You can do the questions with them on Friday .
Science- We learned about roots and drew the 2 kinds of roots (fibrous--like a grass root, and taproot--like a carrot). Fun lesson

Wednesday, Feb. 7
LA - learned about homophones, two words that sound the same but are spelled differently. son and sun are examples. read an article about bears and had a good discussion about fiction vs. non-fiction. created an acrostic using BEARS (David said he'd done these before, but he was disappointed that they had to write more than one word for each letter :) learned about using descriptive words to make a story or letter more interesting. they had fun with this one - probably i could have done more with this if i'd done the lesson in the morning.
i'll post friday's LA lessons tomorrow afternoon. got to go to bed now....

MONDAY FEB.5
Yeah Suzy, welcome to the blog!
LA - 2 hours - they did really well hanging in there. learned about synonyms (they call it cinnamon :) and antonyms. Synonyms (two different words that mean the same thing "happy" and "glad" for example) were a little tricky for them. they wanted to say things like "sun" and "son" which is clever thinking but not a synonym. they were getting it by the end of the lesson. I updated the LA Reference sheet in their folders to include these. discussed comparisons (how things are alike and different) and completed 2 handouts on this. read "over in the meadow" in classics for young readers book. it's similar to "way out in the desert." discussed how repetition in poetry can help you predict, and read quicker and better. discussed cadence.
Science - reviewed germination process. recorded seed observations in the chart. they can look at these every day without recording them - they get to tally how many days they've observed them (see the chart for more info.) learned about the parts of a seed - embryo, cotyledons, and seed coat. split open lima beans to observe these parts - their favorite part was smashing them at the end, they are such boys! i compared the parts to the parts of an egg. i bought some pots and soil to plant the grass seeds on at different levels either on wed. or next week. it was optional today and i didn't have the soil.
History - the Olympics. origins of the olympics and how they're played now. they really got into this. we had a mini olympics at the end throwing the discus, javelin and having races. it was really funny. they got into wrestling too. if my camera worked i could have gotten some good pics :)
I'll post fridays lessons tomorrow...
Thurs. LA for Ranae:
Lesson 7: Activity 3
"country mouse and city mouse" they are familiar with this story from an ISpy book i have. it is in "classics for young readers."
Lesson 8: Activity 4
more "country mouse and city mouse"
the next lessons pertain to "the mermaid who lost her comb" in pegasus series book 2. choose what you like out these lessons but you'll need to read them the story.
Lesson 5:Optional "mermaid" session 1
Lesson 6:Optional "mermaid" session 2
Lesson 7:Optional "mermaid" session 3
Lesson 8:Optional writing a comb poem (if you don't do this, this would be a good optional fri. assignment

Lesson 8:Optional writing a comb poem (if you don't do this, this would be a good optional fri. assignment

FEBRUARY 1
It's ok with me if we want to move forward with LA so we have phonics 2 available for the summer. I might need to talk with Gen - if you are going to do a reading day and she's already there on Thurs. it might work out better to have Phillip in your class, Ranae (I'm not passing him off, really!) It just might make more sense - then I can do more challenging things on Monday and use the full 2 hours. Let me know what you think.
Do you know when the boys need to test into the next grade level? Is that in April also? And did you ask about registering Quinn and Ella? I think these deadlines are going to get here quickly....
See you tomorrow.
Rachelle

Thurs. Feb 1
We had a great day today. I will have Paul help me copy the CD's tonight for French. I couldn't figure out how to do it on my new computer. They need to listen to the lesson until they can tell the story in their own words. They won't be able to do this by Tues. but she said by the end of next week they should be able to.
We were able to finish all the of "Little Bear" assignments for LArts.
Thanks for posting those Rachelle!
See you guys at the Heard tomorrow!
P.S. I talked with my teacher today and if we want to get the 2nd grade stuff for Phonics and Larts (they have to be completed together) then we figured out we would have to do 7 lessons a week to get to 90% by april 1st in Language Arts. Do you guys want to go for this or not? We would make it for Phonics, but not Larts. If we want to do this I could do an extra LA lesson on Thurs. (we have more time with French not beign as long) and we would have to have an extra lesson on Frid. If we don't make the cut-off, we will have to go all summer without Phonics.
