We worked really hard the 2nd half of the day today. History was LONG (1hr. 20min). We covered the myth of Medusa and Perseus and the myth of Hercules. We reviewed for the Unit Assessment, did our history record books, as well as a worksheet. They all aced the assessment and really know their stuff. Lots of fun!
Music. I introduced Gregorian chant to them. We talked about how it is different than our modern music. Gregorian chant had no bar lines, key signatures, or time signatures. We learned about a drone bass (a single note sung through out the entire song). This was the first harmony ever in music. We sung a drone bass through out the recording. We learned the drum and guiro part to Obiswana. This took a long time. The rhythms were not easy. This is why I think the rhythm study we just started will be great. None of them can really internalize rhythm yet if other things are going on around them. This is very age appropriate, but we are always striving for this. We did the next lesson in our rhythm study which was triple meter (3 notes in a beat). They were all able to accomplish the lesson objectives. We will start "Peter and the Wolf" this next week. Suzy--it is the version with story and orchestration. it will be fun. I will look into the show this week too.
