FEB. 14 HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

LA - reviewed for the unit assessment . Unit Assessment - we need to work on knowing the difference between synonyms (different words that mean the same thing, glad and happy) and homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, one and won). Taken separately they understand these and they aren't having a problem with antonyms (opposites), but on the exam they confused synonyms and homophones.

Guided Reading Assessment: they did well with sequencing (Isaac needs to work on slowing down and checking his answers - he missed some because he was guessing, I think.) I encouraged them to go back into the story to look for the answers if they weren't sure. The comparing and contrasting part is easy for them, but it helps them to be critical readers.

We read "The Fox on the hill" in "Young Readers" and did the handout on this, more sequencing and content. We wrote an alternative ending together which I'll type up for you guys tonight - they had fun with it and were pretty creative.

Science - learned about leaves. Chlorophyll in leaves converts sunlight to energy and then food for the plant. The petiole holds the leaf onto the stem. The veins carry the food to other parts of the leaf. They could all stand to review these parts, especially that the cholorphyll in is found in the leaves and makes the plant food. Did some fun leaf etchings with crayon. Planted grass seeds at shallow, medium and deep holes in pots to see which will sprout fastest.

History - the myth of the naming of Athens. Athena and Poseidon both wanted it to be named after them. Athena gave an olive branch and Poseidon gave a war horse. The council of gods chose Athena because her gift would bring peace and plenty to Athens. They wrote a sentence about what they learned and colored a picture of Athena and Poseidon.

They played together really well today. They had alot of fun and even though they were silly sometimes, they didn't have to do any writing :)

I'll post the friday LA lessons tomorrow.
