SCIENCE 2 - learned about types of soil - clay, silt and sand. clay has the smallest particles and sand has the largest. we looked at the jars of soil we had added water to so that they could separate out elements and types of soil. they found humus, silt and sand. they remembered silt from the history lessons about the Nile River and the Yangtze River. we watched a story about Arctic Terns who travel to different locations and experience the different types of soil. they really liked that, it was silly.
SCIENCE K- began the new unit on the earth. we talked about the difference between using a map and a globe. they understood that you can see all the continents at once when you look at a flat map but not when you look at a globe. discussed the difference between a circle and a sphere. made a model of the earth using a tennis ball (it's in their backpacks if they want it.) we talked about where the earth is in the solar system and how we have day and night because the earth spins on it's axis (not in the lesson, but they seemed interested.) when we were looking at my model of the solar system, Nadia pointed out that Pluto was not a planet anymore, just a dwarf planet - go Nadia! they had fun with the lesson and I think Shaylene actually got some work done, too!
