WEDNESDAY FEB. 6

SCIENCE 2 - began the new unit on soil. learned about the 4 elements found in soil: mineral particles, water, air and humus (decaying organic matter). we looked at soil samples and found examples of mineral particles and humus, and did experiments to show that there is water and air in the soil. I have the jars of soil mixed with water that I'll send home tomorrow. we went outside and dug in the soil to find the elements. they found great examples - Suzy, look in David's folder for leaf samples that show the stages of decay. of course, they found evidence of past civilizations and buried palm tree forests. it was fun and they kept at it for a long time.

HISTORY 2 - read the book St. George and the Dragon - it was great, lovely illustrations and detailed and creative descriptions of the dragon. they really enjoyed the story and we talked about how legends help reinforce the Code of Chivalry by giving examples of knights following the Code. they remembered a lot from yesterday's lesson. we made a die showing the Code, also. we learned about lives of serfs during the feudal time and how they were attached to the land and could be bought and sold with the land. they worked from sunrise to sunset everyday except Sunday and holidays, when they would do whatever work they had to for their own sustenance. they could gain freedom if they left the master's land for 1 year and 1 day, but most didn't out of fear of starvation or attack. we made a serf hovel out of mud, sand, sticks and dry grass. they did very well writing their summaries by including details - check them out. it was a very good day.
