Wed K science and history
Wow! good thing it was an easy day!
History went pretty well and took longer than I thought even without the salt dough. I had to do a lot of getting back on track mostly with the girls. They were not being the best at being kind with each other. Now they seem better. Quinn did really well at focusing. We didn't get the last picture done. We did do the concentration game pieces for the animals that life on the savana, and played the game. We covered the areas of Africa (savanna and Lake Victoria, Nile and Congo Rivers). Ranae, I went over with them what color dough they will be doing on what areas for next week.
Science was a pretty short lesson. We didn't do either optional. We read about Jane Goodall and how she lived with the chimpanzees in order to study them. We went outside and they followed ants for 2 minutes to track what they do and tried to watch birds flying. This was it though, they were so done after this. I tried to ask assessment questions, but didn't get much out of them. I told them that moms would be asking the questions.
They are doing really well dispite Ilaiza and Ryan interupting. I'm still trying to figure things out since the time change. I'm just having a hard time getting Ilaiza down for a nap. Ryan usually goes down good if he had an early enough nap #1. I may need to figure out a new plan for Ilaiza. I would try to skip her nap, but then she gets cranky and loud and if Ryan isn't down yet, it's hard to deal with both of them.
Any ideas from you pros who have dealt with the younger ones?
I'm looking forward to Saturday.
Cindy

Tuesday 2nd grade History
2nd Grade History Unit 6 lesson 1 - The Contributions of Rome
While the Roman Empire fell, the influence of Rome lives on. We looked at some English words that came from Latin words. The Romans gave us many things, including books, words, the names of our months and planets, styles of architecture, and the idea of republican government.
This was review for the boys but it was fun putting it all together in a lesson. Great discussion.
Thursday please send K art book; Come look with me: Enjoying Art with Children
Saturday I will bring hot dogs and buns, lime graneda, and the pumpkin project.
Happy Halloween, Suzy

Tues. Classes
We had a fun Halloween celebration today. The kids were so excited to be in their costumes and played really well together. I think the new schedule is going to work out well.
K Music- practiced reading rhythms off the board. Sorted instruments by high and low and learned to read high and low notes in music. They used note chips to write their own high and low piece. Reviewed Mozart and listened to excerpts of "The Magic Flute". They all seemed to like the story. Rachelle and Suzy, you may want to pull out your "Magic Flute" book from last year and let Harrison and Ella look at it. We will review more next week in class.
2nd Grade Ensemble- Good class. They need to work on #1, 2, &3 on pg. 10. With the recording they need to work on pg. 7 # 1, 2, 4 and pg. 6 # 1 & 5. That will help them get ready for our concert in December.
K History- We reviewed the African Sahara and introduced the Kalahari desert. We started the salt dough relief maps (Cindy I will bring those to you tomorrow) and did an experiement with sand and making an oasis. They liked this. We talked about life in the desert, they read a story in the reading room about life in the desert, and starting coloring a picture (they didn't get to finish this).
I will download the pictures tonight and see how they turned out.
See everyone tomorrow.

NOTES FOR THE WEEK:
SCIENCE 2 - I need all the magnets and the magnet book again this week.
POINTS FOLDER - We'll be adding the points and they can cash them in next week -Nov. 6. This will be week 5 for Oct.
I'll be giving everyone a new Roster with baby Eve's birthday on it and a new schedule that shows the new Tuesday schedule.
FOR THE PARTY - I'll be grilling chicken and hot dogs/hamburgers for the kids and we'll have cider and marshmallows to roast. Cindy is bringing a fall casserole and Ranae said she'd make cornbread and bring some veggies/fruit for the kids. Suzy - that's the menu so far so whatever Scott is up for is fine... I'll give you some limes tomorrow if he wants to make graneda.
See you tomorrow! Rachelle

My vote
I too like 2 and 3, but 1 shows the most of her, and maybe shows how she's like her brothers?, or not?, for those who would be able to compare.
Cindy
Cindy
I like.............................
Ranae,
I like the first two best probably the second would be my first choice; but really, considering the subject they are all cute.
Cindy,
I would be interested in going to one of those Ballets you mentioned.

Art October 25
- K Art - Lesson 7: Meet Henry Ossawa Tanner He painted The Banjo Lesson; a k12 print. He showed caring scenes in his paintings: he was an African-American artist; he went to a good art school in Philadelphia at a time when it was difficult for African-Americans to go to school. He was born in Pennsylvania. We also looked at Mary Cassatt's paintings of mother and child a favorite artist of mine and who is also an American artist from Philadelphia. Then they made a drawing of a caring scene.
NEXT TUESDAY PLEASE SEND COME LOOK WITH ME: ENJOYING ART WITH CHILDREN.
Thank you, Suzy
2nd grade Art - Unit 8 lesson 1 & 2: Roman art Unit 1 they learned about the differences between a fresco painting and a mosaic. Fresco's are painted directly on the plaster walls of buildings and homes. Mosaics are made by arranging tiny pieces of tile or glass. Unit 2 was review of the Pantheon, Colosseum in Rome and the Parthenon in Greece. They do have these three ruins down. I showed them the pictures and let them do the talking. They made a mosaic out of wood squares. I we will be finishing unit 8; it follows along with History. Roman sculpture is next then on to the Byzantines.
Happy pumpkin hunting, Suzy

HISTORY K - Went to Saudi Arabia and read a story about 3 brothers who go to visit the king in Riyadh in the middle of the desert. Learned about the head scarves and camels and talked about The Arabian Nights. Read Alibaba and the 40 Theives (I left a few gory details out) and read a story about Sinbad and the giant bird called a Roc. Ella and I made hummus in the morning and we all tasted that (except for Quinn) and ate flat bread. It was a good lesson.
WEDNESDAY OCT. 24
HISTORY 2 - learned about Attila the Hun and how he terrorized what was left of the Roman Empire before he died peacefully in his sleep after partying too much. The boys were captivated by this story and very worried about the fall of the Roman empire. We learned about how after Attila the Hun died there was chaos in Western Rome and one of Attila's generals made his 6 year old son emperor. That lasted for 10 months and then the barbarians overthrew him and Rome fell. The barbarians formed little kingdoms all around the Western territory. The boys asked, "but the Eastern Empire was still ok? right?" They are sad to see it all go....
SCIENCE 2 - more fun with magnets. they really understand the concept. they know that the earth is a big magnet and that magnetite is stone magnetized from the iron in the earth. they have fun just playing with the magnets and making them spin. we pulled out the compasses, too and talked more about that. It was a good day, except for my sudden illness:)
Suzy and Ranae, thanks for covering for me today. I'll do the big boy's science next week in place of the optional one on compassesj (they already get this). and we'll do the kindergarten science lesson on our own - it's "what animals eat." Thanks again!

Tues Music Classes
Just wanted to write a quick note about what we did yesterday. Cindy--I am planning on having a normal day Tues. at my house. Suzy and I are going to do some fun Halloween activities and if they all wear their costumes I will have out my photography backdrop and take pictures. I have a new black one just for Halloween :-). RaChelle, I forgot to tell you today. You might want to suggest to Julie to have Ella come at 9 or 9:30 for a 30 minute private lesson right before the boys. She can always move the boys back 30 minutes if she needs to and that wouldn't matter. Hopefully you can work it out :-).
K Music- We reviewed our Japanese song game "Wild Bird" and reviewed that konnichiwa means hello. I introduced the rhythm cards and they were able to use their cards to write rhythms that I spoke to them. They really seemed to like these cards and are doing great with rhythm. We talked a little bit about Mozart and listened to "Twinkle Variations" which he wrote. I introduced high and low in written notation to the song "Star Light". They seemed to get this right away.
2nd grade Ensemble- They did great. They are to work on the last 2 songs on the page that haven't been passed off as well as the next page. I can't wait to do a concert for everyone!

Ballet Arizona
I saw info on this last week at the girl's dance classes. It was a letter sent for school groups. Ballet Arizona is putting on a few performances for school groups. The first one is Giselle, but I believe the date to order tickets was past already. Dec 13th and 14th is the Nutcracker. Don Quixote is 2/15 and Mixed Repertory is 4/3 Contact name is Eric Ketcherside @ 602-343-6517, or eketcherside@balletaz.org.
I would be interested in the last 2 performances. I think tickets were only $4. If you want me to do more research and get the forms to fill out and send in I can.

Wed K science and history
Science- we studied how animals move (feet, legs, or wings or fins, or moving their bodies-snakes). They all got to pretend to be certain animals and we guessed what they were. We went online to San Diego Zoo and looked at some animals
History- we moved on to Africa. They all did good finding it. I could tell Quinn was able to look for the A for Africa to be sure where he was. We located the Nile and Congo River and Lake Victoria. We talked about the Sahara Desert, how they survive with special clothing, move around so their animals can find grass for food, and how they use camels to carry their belongings so they don't get tired. (They already knew a lot of this I was told :) ). Good memory's!
They made a drawing of a camel crossing the desert on a piece of sandpaper, then ironed it with wax paper. I'm not sure if the idea was to see the picture on the wax paper or to change the drawing, but I sent both home.
I finished the jingle bracelts and anklets, but we ran out of time so we didn't get any jingling to music from India done.
I made the clay dough for relief maps. It seems really dry, but it says it should get moist while in the fridge. If it's too dry when we need it, it says just to add a few drops of water. I'll send it on Tues, if we are back to normal next week, otherwise, wherever it should go.

Wed K science and history
Ranae, How cute and precious is Eve. I can't wait to meet her and I know Nadia is excited too.
Science- we studied animal coverings, fur, scales, feathers, hard shells and soft, smooth covering. We made a mobile (which I forgot to send home b/c they were still wet and drying).
History-on to India. We really did a lot, but it was all so good, I didn't want to skip any of it. We read the story of how the Taj Mahal came to exist. Then we glued different Indian spices to a picture of the Taj Mahal. They colored an elephant like the Indians would decorate them for holidays. We made a bracelet and anklet while we listened to music. I will add jingle bells next week and we'll do some dancing.
They had a good day and worked hard on all their projects.

HISTORY 2 - Diocletian split the Roman empire into East and West and appointed a co-emperor in the West. He assigned 2 assistant emperors called caesars and made himself a god. He persecuted Christians because they only believed in one god. When he retired, 7 men fought with their armies over who would be emperor next. Constantine won this battle after having a vision that he needed to become a Christian and fight under the Roman symbol for Christ. He made it legal to be Christian in the Roman Empire. We looked at a good website that has history games;
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/romans . You might want to check it out. They were a little silly off and on but it was a lot of info. and they settled down.
SCIENCE 2 - began the unit on magnets. they really liked this. we learned that the poles (ends) are the strongest part of the magnet and that there are 2 types - curved and bar magnets. did some experiments with magnets and talked about the earth being a magnet and why a compass works (this is in the next lesson, but they wanted to talk about it) . we read up to page 10 in the book but they can read on if they want to (they all did!) we'll be reading the rest of it next time anyway. we played with the different types of magnets for a long time. Ranae - in the K Science kit is a pack of bar magnets that are really strong - Isaac might want those for next time. I left the magnets in their backpacks in case they want them at home, but I'll need those and the books for the next couple lessons. good class!
Cindy - I'll put you on the wait-list for Seussical, if you want me too. there weren't enough tickets left.
BABY EVE'S LITTLE FOOT IS PRECIOUS! can't wait to hold her again! Rachelle

Tuesday 16 History
Unit 4 lesson 1: The boys read the story of Saint Valentine. They are all concerned about how Christians were treated by the Romans. I reminded them of how lucky they are for living in the U.S.A and can choose the church they want to attend. Ranae this is a history book they have from K-12. The pictures are fun to look at. They are mosaics which I hope to do in art class. There is an optional lesson that looked good to dc; write a description of Saint Valentine and then draw a picture of him.
We are headed out of town Wednesday night so happy weekend to all and we will see you next Tuesday.

October 15 Art
K Art - Unit: 3 lessons: 5 and 6 We looked at royal families portraits and portraits of families doing common every day things. They learned that long ago we didn't have cameras and families had to hire artists to paint their portraits. Many family portraits from a long time ago show wealthy families, because they had a lot of money to pay artists. They used pastels for the first time today to make a family portrait. So part of the lesson was exploring with a new medium. We had fun talking about our own families and of course the new addition too Quinn's family.
2nd grade Art - Unit: 3 lessons: 3 and 4 Patterns in a rain forest is the subject of these two lessons that we started last week and will finish next week. They are working on a large jungle scene and I'm teaching them how to make depth with multiple horizion lines, size of objects and color. They have been very interested in this and I can't wait to see what they do with it in later projects. We did alot with patterns last year. I found out they are good at finding alernating patterns but needed review on repeating patterns. They have learned about over- lapping and how that helps to create depth too. We have looked for many examples of overlapping in art work. We have look for tints and shades particularly greens in the jungle scenes.
Lesson: 5 Unit assessment - Read about art and artists: James Audubon, van Gough,
Brancusi, and O'Keefe from How Artists see animals book. (subject birds).
They all did well in the assessment.

STUFF I NEED FOR WED.
SCIENCE 2 - make sure their handouts for Unit 4 are in their folders. I need all the magnets that came in their AZVA science kits and the book - "What makes a magnet?"
Suzy - if you want to send all your magnets, that would be great.
HISTORY 2 - they need Unit 5 handouts.
thanks everyone, Rachelle

SCIENCE 2 - finished Unit 3. talked about how complex machines' parts are made up of simple machines. looked for everyday simple and complex machines. they really enjoy this and have a good grasp of the concepts of trading force for distance and for looking for simple machines in tools. we talked about Rube Goldberg machines (very complex machines that complete a normally simple task, ie. the machines in Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang or PeeWee Herman's Movie.) google Rube Goldberg and you can watch some amazing machines - we looked at a few today and they got a kick out of it. help them look for the 6 simple machines we know: levers, inclined planes, wedges, wheels/axles, screws, and pulleys. David really has a knack for this. Ranae, I told your dad about googling this, too. Really good day, they aced the assessment.
SCIENCE K- had fun looking at the parts of trees: trunk, roots, branches, leaves, twigs and bark. talked about how bark is like our skin and injuring it hurts the tree. learned about the difference between deciduous (trees that lose their leaves in the fall) trees and evergreen (trees that keep their leaves all year) trees. they understood this. we went outside and stood under the ends of branches on trees to see how far out their roots grow. we made imprints of 3 different types of bark on trees and made imprints of 3 different types of leaves. I'm glad there weren't any bees or wasps out today! we read "The Giving Tree" while they had their snacks. it was a very good day and I think they liked the projects.
Cindy - I can donate blood on that day. Let me know if you want can trade childcare for that.
We'll be at the party Friday - let me know if I can bring anything.
Ranae - I'd be happy to take Quinn, Isaac and Ian (or any combination thereof) to Nadia's party. We're going to the fair in the morning and I can pick them up before going over there, or your parents can drop them off at my house, either way.
Great pics, Ranae. Glad your feeling good. Your mom says you look great, too :) Rachelle

Blood donor
Hey, I don't know if you gals give blood (not you Ranae, you are giving enough life support right now :) ) Litchfield Elementary is having a blood drive on Mon Oct 29 from 2-6. I'm going to sign up. It's been years since I've donated, particially b/c of the inconvenience of not having a local place to do it. So, now that it's close and I'm pretty sure I can with nursing I'm giving it a go. Let me know if you are interested. There's 2 ways to register, online or by phone through the school. The kids get little prizes if they get people to donate.
Congrats Ranae!
I just wanted to say I can't wait to meet baby Eve. I hear she's really cute! I'm glad things are going well for all of you with your new blessing!

Nadia's Birthday
Ranae and Suzy, I realized that you probably don't know about Nadia's bd plans. I'm sorry, I'm always really bad about invitations, I just usually do a verbal invite. I thought after the fair on Fri would be a good time, so we don't have to make a seperate day and time for it. I'm just going to play the timing by ear. It will just be here, mostly in backyard. We have a trampoline up now, and if we want we can go over to the park.
Ranae, I know you're not planning on going to the fair, but Quinn and Isaac are welcome, even Ian too. Suzy, Rachelle said you might be heading out of town? If not David and Harrison are invited. Ilaiza and Nadia have been talking about the boys a lot. I think Ilaiza has even said that David is her best friend! I can tell Nadia is really enjoying having the older boys there on the days they are together.

THURS. OCT. 11, 2007
K SCIENCE - learned about which parts of plants we eat ie. tomatoes are a fruit, celery is a stem, carrots are roots, spinach is leaves, and broccoli is a flower. they had a plate with each of these (except the broccoli) and we dipped them in paint and painted a plant with the different parts. they remembered all the parts and had fun talking about which parts of plants they wouldn't eat - the bark off a tree, the leaves off a tomato plant, the seeds of an apple. it was a good day.
2 SCIENCE - learned about inclined planes, wedges and screws as simple machines to make work easier. a screw is actually an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder - we made a model of this so that they could see how the raised part of the screw is the same distance as the long side of the inclined plane. I forgot to put it in their backpacks - I'll give it to them on Mon. we compared the force needed to pull something up an inclined plane and the force needed to pull it straight up - it takes less force but needs to move a farther distance. they really understand these concepts. it was a good lesson, despite their obvious excitement about baby Eve!
NEXT WEEK - K SCIENCE - we need Unit 5 handouts
2 SCIENCE - we need Unit 4 handouts
2 HISTORY - we need Unit 5 handouts
CINDY - I'm teaching Unit 4 Lesson 4 on Monday so you'll be teaching Unit 5 Lesson 1 on Wednesday.
SUZY - can you ask your mom about a good day for the kids to come and sing Christmas songs at her work? we should probably get that scheduled soon....
ADD TO YOUR CALENDARS:
HALLOWEEN PARTY - rescheduled for Sat. Nov. 3. more details to follow....
K CHRISTMAS PARTY/GINGERBREAD MAKING DAY - FRI. DEC. 14 at Rachelle's.
MON. NOV. 26 - we'll have school this day (no French) and NO CLASS on THURS. NOV. 29

K ART - Unit: 3 lesson: 4 We did not do Art on Tuesday- so only one lesson was finished this week. We looked at the print of Edward VI as a child by Hans Holbein. We looked at the clothes and rattle the child was holding. We had a discussion about how realistic the painting is and picked out the elements that made it realistic. Ella said, ' ' It must have took a thousand years to make the painting." Then the kids made a drawing of me wearing a hat, holding a mug and sitting in a chair. They worked really hard and drew a good 45 min. I would like too do more full-body portraits soon because of how well they did. They all drew my glasses and hat. Ella and Nadia drew the chair I was sitting in. Yes!
2ND GRADE ART - Unit:3 lesson:3 We finished last weeks assessment which was a great review and they did remember some of the things about the artist Henri Rousseau. I love it when they tell me the artist is from France and then they look at me with questioning eyes. Good guess guys. Today's lesson we looked for over lapping in Rousseau's jungle prints and had a discussion about how to create depth in a painting or drawing. (different sizes, colors and the use of more than one horizon line.) We started a large drawing of a jungle scene they will finish next week. I will send home the assessments for lesson 3 and 4 next week. The boys are putting great effort in their projects and have settled into art.
NEXT WEEK PLEASE SEND - HOW ARTISTS SEE ANIMALS AND SAINT VALENTINE, WHICH IS A HISTORY BOOK.
Harriman family we have been thinking of you all day. You are in our prayers.

K Wed Science and History
Rachelle, so is the party the 27th or 3rd? Either date works here.
We're in for Ella's dance recital, probably 4 of us.
I just started getting some info on the shoeboxes, I'll pass it to you as I get more.
We would be interested in doing a service project. No different ideas are popping in my head. I'll keep thinking.
Science- we talked about seeds and how the fruit of a plant is the seed. We looked at a tomatoes pepper, apple and pear to see it's seeds. They drew a picture of each one of these. We learned about graphs and did one to count seeds. They did so well figuring this out!
History- we visited Japan. We made fish kites- which in in Japan they fly outside their homes on children's day (June 5th) for good luck, flying one for each child in the home. When I told them Konichiwa they said we already know that-they remembered from world music. My sitter came by while we were doing this lesson, she had just been to Japan this summer, so she was able to add some info while we took the tour. We didn't do the lunch boxes, depending on the lesson next week, maybe we can do it then.

SCIENCE 2 - learned about pulleys. fixed pulleys don't move when you pull on the rope and moveable pulleys do move. it takes less force to move an object up and down using a pulley than just using your hands. we also set up a block and tackle with 2 pulleys to show how that works. they did well answering all the questions and taking the assessment. they had fun setting the pulley up outside on my playland - they all want to build a tree house now so they can set a pulley up there.
HISTORY 2 - learned about what Juvenal (a Roman satirist) called "bread and circuses" - a way for the government to distract people from economic hardship by giving them cheap grain and entertainment. the Circus Maximus was a large oval amphitheatre 7 football fields long where chariot races were held. the Colosseum was where Romans watched gladiators fight each other to the death. they also watched animals fight each other, gladiators fight animals, or people get thrown to wild animals as a punishment. the gladiators were mostly slaves and criminals who trained in order to put on a good show. a small number were actually volunteers who thought it would be glamorous to be a gladiator. the boys were upset that the Romans thought this was fun to watch and they were disturbed that most gladiators didn't have a choice about fighting. they liked the story of Androcles and the Lion because it had a happy ending - Isaac said it made him want to cry, it was such a nice story. we looked at a lot of pictures of the Colosseum and we made a small model of it. they have coloring pages they can finish in their folders. we looked at footage of a recent volcano erupting. they did pretty well on the unit assessment. they all did a great job on their presentations - they asked good questions of each other and did well trying to answer the questions. I'd like to do more of these- they seemed proud of themselves when they were finished.
PARTY - Can everyone make it to the Halloween party if we change it to Sat. Nov. 3rd? Scott has a work party on Oct. 27th. We could have it around 3 or 4 and roast marshmallows and wear costumes. Let me know...
Tonight's the big night - many prayers for an easy delivery Ranae! See you tomorrow - Rachelle

Tuesday Art Oct. 2, 07
K Art- Last week the awesome kindergartners did 3 art lessons. Tuesday we did Unit 3 lessons 1 and 2. We looked at self-portraits of several famous artists. Traced their faces with our fingers. We looked at the galleries in both lessons and did the activity in lesson 2 that highlighted the features of the face. Mostly review. Lesson 2 we looked at the features of the whole body and they did a whole body drawing.
Thursday K Art- lesson 3 Meet Picasso. He was born in Spain. He studied art in France. When he first started to paint at the young age of 23 he went through a blue period (painted blue pictures) mainly because he was hungry, cold and glum. Nadia and Ella were very concerned about Picasso being hungry and didn't understand why people would not buy his paintings so he could buy food. When he fell in love he went through a pink period of painting. When he was older he was the one of the first painters to rearrange body parts of a portrait painting and paint from his imagination (abstractly). I sent home assessments on this lesson. All three of them do great on the assessments and answer with little prompting. They are so eager too learn.
Next week family portraits.
2ND grade Art- Unit 3 lessons 1 and 2.
Lesson 1 - We looked at patterns and alternating patterns in art work. Mainly review except I have a lot more prints to look at; great discussion. We looked at patterns in leaves and in jungle prints. They practiced drawing leaves as a worm-up for the jungle painting.
Lesson 2 - Meet Henri Rousseau. He was born in France. He loved rain forests. He used his imagination to combine different plants and wild animals to create make-believe rain forests. He uses many different shapes and patterns. He uses many different tints and shades of green. You have two of Rousseaus jungle prints on from 1st and 2ND grade prints. The jungle paintings the boys did; I had them mix different shades of green first.
There jungle paintings turned out great. I think the boys like to work with water colors. Although the boys do need a lot of prompting with art assessments right now?
2nd grade History on Tuesday the boys need Pompeii: Buried Alive reader.
The baby shower was fun! I can't wait t meet baby Eve.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 3, 2007
SCIENCE 2 - started the new unit on machines. learned about simple lever machines and using objects as levers (spoon, hammer). Scientists define "work" as having 2 parts - force and movement. So pushing on a wall is force but not work because nothing is moving. They really got this and how to use and describe a lever machine. The moving part is the lever or lever arm and the stationary part is the folcrum. They were disappointed that my simple machines were the only machines we were building, especially David. Sorry, guys! I think if Paul is willing, they should earn a chance to build a really cool machine.
HISTORY 2 - learned about the life of Jesus. I focused on how Jesus lived during the time of the Pax Romana and Tiberius Caesar was the emperor. Pontius Pilate worked for Caesar. I think it gave them a new perspective on Jesus' time and culture. We went over how the Jews bible is the Old Testament and the New Testament begins with Jesus' life and Christians use both parts. I think they understood this. We also learned about the crazy emperors Caligula and Nero. Caligula wanted his horse to become a senator and it had a marble stable and diamond necklace. Nero played the lyre and forced everyone to listen to him for hours. He didn't care about Rome at all and watched it burn while he played the lyre. He built himself an enormous palace where the fire had destroyed everything. It had a revolving room and paneled ceilings that could be moved to drop rose petals on his audience. The boys LOVED that - thought it was the funniest thing ever. He blamed the fire on the Christians but eventually the senate sentenced him to death. He killed himself - his last words were "the world is losing a great artist....." The boys got a real kick out of this story.
HOMEWORK - do a short (minimum of 1 paragraph, minimum of three sentences) report on the topic in their folders to present to class on Wed. Oct. 10. They can share more info. than they write if they want to.
THURSDAY, OCT. 4
SCIENCE K - began new unit on plants. talked about the plant parts - stem, leaves, fruit, roots. made a model of a sunflower. we planted sunflower seeds in my yard - lots of sunflower seeds! they did really well on the assessment and could name all the parts. the tree's stem is called the trunk but they didn't seem confused by this. it was a fun day.
SCIENCE 2 - learned about wheels and axles. talked about the 3 types of friction - sliding, rolling and liquid friction. experimented with ways to use rolling friction to make work easier - talked about how the Egyptians rolled heavy stone blocks on tree trunks to make it easier, and made a model of how Nero might have made his revolving room. They got into using the tinker toys for this. compared the distance a narrow axle moves with that of a wheel. I think they understand how the larger wheel uses requires less force and moves a farther distance. used marbles as ball bearings to make 2 paint cans stacked together turn easily, even added oil as a lubricant. it worked really well. they were still disappointed by my "machines." Mr. Paul needs to come to the rescue!

sorry, that was Ryan already!
so, I think I misplaced one of their sheets, so if may not even be in their folder.
History, we had Mr. Traveling duck go on down to China. We noticed the Yellow River, and the Yangtze River. We read the story "The Story About Ping". They made their new suitcases. They tried chop sticks with jello cubes "thanks Rachelle" and rice pudding (although Ella and Quinn weren't keen on that). We started the red dragon boats, but my brain wasn't working and I just couldn't figure it out. So sorry. I'm hoping you guys had figured it out 2 years ago? I sent home all the pieces so they can finish it.
That's all, they did really great despite my head not functioning properly.

Classes went great, despite my mess-ups. I was just really off on timing, getting other kids down for nap, and I don't know what else.

Tues. Classes
We had a great day yesterday---all 5's for everyone----yeah!
Kmusic- We did our weather story again with different percussion instruments. We danced like the wind with scarves, we listened to different bird sounds and tried to identify them. We also learned that 2 8th notes are "tee tee" and they all read simple rhythms from the board and played them on the shakers. We learned a new song game called "Blue Bird". It was a fun class.
World Music-- for the 1st half of class, we listened and danced to "Mardi Gras Mambo". It took them a while to guess that this song was from North America. We then talked about how it was from Louisiana and what Mardi Gras was (sparring them all the details :-)). Next week I will through in the music history part of the lesson. For the second half of the class I introduced the boomwhackers. We did a fun boomwhaker game and them started working on "Jingle Bells" for our Christmas concert. They really seemed to like being in an ensemble together, so I think we will do this every week. The K's caught on quickly.
KHistory- We finished up the unit on Europe. We visited Italy and talked about the sights there (Leaning tower, Colusseum, Mt. Etna). I then read them "Straga Nona" which takes place in Italy and is about an out of control magic pasta pot. We will be passing this around since they really liked it. I took them out one by one and asked them the Europe review questions. I thought this was better than the assesment they had. They colored some of their postcards and that was all we had time for. They can color them at home if they would like. We are on to Asia today and next week.
2nd grade Ensemble- they are getting so much better on their recorder! We did some echoing games for ear training and worked on finished pg. 8. If they didn't pass off all the songs on this page, they need to practice them for next week. I asked them to practice pg. 9 for homework. We reviewed a few songs. It think they will have some great songs for our Christmas concert!
Everyone should have gotten their pictures. If you want to order some, I would like to place an order on Friday. Just tell e-mail me what you would like, that way we can save on shipping. If you would like to wait, you can order them anytime from shutterfly and can get the pass code from me.
Have a great week!
