K SCIENCE - learned about which parts of plants we eat ie. tomatoes are a fruit, celery is a stem, carrots are roots, spinach is leaves, and broccoli is a flower. they had a plate with each of these (except the broccoli) and we dipped them in paint and painted a plant with the different parts. they remembered all the parts and had fun talking about which parts of plants they wouldn't eat - the bark off a tree, the leaves off a tomato plant, the seeds of an apple. it was a good day.
2 SCIENCE - learned about inclined planes, wedges and screws as simple machines to make work easier. a screw is actually an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder - we made a model of this so that they could see how the raised part of the screw is the same distance as the long side of the inclined plane. I forgot to put it in their backpacks - I'll give it to them on Mon. we compared the force needed to pull something up an inclined plane and the force needed to pull it straight up - it takes less force but needs to move a farther distance. they really understand these concepts. it was a good lesson, despite their obvious excitement about baby Eve!
