SCIENCE 2 - finished Unit 3. talked about how complex machines' parts are made up of simple machines. looked for everyday simple and complex machines. they really enjoy this and have a good grasp of the concepts of trading force for distance and for looking for simple machines in tools. we talked about Rube Goldberg machines (very complex machines that complete a normally simple task, ie. the machines in Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang or PeeWee Herman's Movie.) google Rube Goldberg and you can watch some amazing machines - we looked at a few today and they got a kick out of it. help them look for the 6 simple machines we know: levers, inclined planes, wedges, wheels/axles, screws, and pulleys. David really has a knack for this. Ranae, I told your dad about googling this, too. Really good day, they aced the assessment.

SCIENCE K- had fun looking at the parts of trees: trunk, roots, branches, leaves, twigs and bark. talked about how bark is like our skin and injuring it hurts the tree. learned about the difference between deciduous (trees that lose their leaves in the fall) trees and evergreen (trees that keep their leaves all year) trees. they understood this. we went outside and stood under the ends of branches on trees to see how far out their roots grow. we made imprints of 3 different types of bark on trees and made imprints of 3 different types of leaves. I'm glad there weren't any bees or wasps out today! we read "The Giving Tree" while they had their snacks. it was a very good day and I think they liked the projects.

Cindy - I can donate blood on that day. Let me know if you want can trade childcare for that.
We'll be at the party Friday - let me know if I can bring anything.

Ranae - I'd be happy to take Quinn, Isaac and Ian (or any combination thereof) to Nadia's party. We're going to the fair in the morning and I can pick them up before going over there, or your parents can drop them off at my house, either way.

Great pics, Ranae. Glad your feeling good. Your mom says you look great, too :) Rachelle
